Nature Manipulated Takes You on a Tour of Cementerio Colon

Cemeteries are one of my favorite places in the world. They are so peaceful and beautiful. Most of all, they tell a history. They speak of people who have passed and of those who have loved them.

In 2004 I got the opportunity to go to Havana, Cuba. It was not long after I arrived that I found the city's Cementerio Colon. Of all the cemeteries that I have been to, Cementerio Colon is by far the most spectacular. Sitting in the middle of a grand city that has decayed from years of economic hardships, the cemetery still maintains its grandeur. That is not to say that time has not taken its toll on the cemetery. Broken glass and missing locks adorn some of the musoleums and sun and rain watched etchings mark the tombstones, yet flowers still line the aisles.

The first time I went to the cemetery, I spent three hours there taking pictures. The heat was strong but the history I had to catch up on mattered to me more. I drank my water and strolled along.

In 2005 I got to go back, and of course I took more photographs and read more tombstones. I took in the incredible scenery. The view will inevitably change. From the inside and out. Now you look outside the cemetery's gates and see a poor (economically) city. Buildings slowly crumble and a woman on the corner screams "No es facil," it's not easy. I wonder what the view from inside the cemetery looked like forty years ago, and what it will look like twenty years from now.

For now these are the memories I have, and they are great ones.

I'm not sure how the Revlon boxes fit in though. :D

Beautiful pictures! I grew up next to a Quaker cemetery. Actually the first person buried there died on our property in the 1700's. There used to be a church there and he fell off the roof trying to repair it. He was known for whistling while he worked, and we swear we could still here him sometimes :)
